Dental check-up in Havering
10 dental practices in Havering publish what they charge for dental check-up. Half of them ask between £32 and £89 for an appointment, and the middle price is £45 — 10% below the pooled median of £50 across the 24 boroughs where we hold dental check-up prices. The figures below are those practices' own published fees, read in August 2026, each one linked to the practice and its CQC registration. They are not quotes: what you pay depends on what the examination finds. An NHS examination is a Band 1 charge of £27.90 — the same in every borough.
| Option | Cost (per appointment) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Private — lower | £33 | 25th percentile of published prices |
| Private — typical | £45 | Median across 10 Havering practices |
| Private — upper | £89 | 75th percentile |
| NHS | £27.90 | Band 1, set nationally |
How this is worked out. Every figure comes from a price list the practice publishes itself. We drop “from” prices, which describe the cheapest possible case rather than a price, and variants narrower than the treatment named. 10 Havering practices remain. The middle price across all 24 boroughs we cover is £50. How we read a fee guide.
- The Havering median is £45 — 10% below the pooled median across the 24 boroughs with published dental check-up data on this site (£50, n=529).
- That makes Havering the 21th most expensive of those 24 boroughs for this treatment.
- The middle half of prices runs £32–£89 (a £56 range), a wide spread: the borough has distinct budget and premium tiers. The full range is £10–£115.
- 10 of the 50 CQC-registered practices in Havering publish a price for this treatment (20%); the figures describe those 10, not the whole borough.
- All figures are per appointment, taken from each practice's own fee guide, so they can be compared like for like.
| Neighbouring borough | Median | vs Havering | Middle half | Practices |

| Bexley | £47 | £2 more | £39–£51 | 8 |
Why do some Havering practices list under half the median?
1 of 10 published prices are below £22: Hacton Dental Care (£10). A figure this far below the borough median is often a narrower product than the rest of the table (a single session, a top-up, or an introductory offer) — check what the practice's fee guide includes before comparing.
Why are some Havering prices more than double the median?
3 of 10 listed prices exceed £90: Winning Smiles (£95), Highland View Dental Surgery Hornchurch (£100), Smile Sanctuary (£115). These are typically premium packages or specialist-led treatment; the median is a better guide to what a typical Havering practice charges.

What you are paying for
A check-up is an examination, a soft-tissue check for anything abnormal, and an assessment of gum health. Radiographs are often included for a new patient and charged separately afterwards. Ask which, because a £45 check-up with £30 of X-rays is not cheaper than a £75 one that includes them.
How often you actually need one
NICE guideline CG19 does not recommend six-monthly check-ups for everyone. It recommends an interval set individually between 3 and 24 months, based on your risk of dental disease, and its 2018 surveillance review found no evidence that a 24-month interval harmed low-risk adults. If you are recalled every six months by default, it is reasonable to ask what your risk assessment was — over ten years the difference is substantial.
The NHS alternative
An NHS check-up is a Band 1 charge of £27.90, which covers the examination, any X-rays and a scale and polish if you clinically need one. That price is set nationally and does not change with the postcode. The barrier is availability, not cost.
A routine scale and polish every six months does not keep gums healthier than having one when your dentist judges it necessary.
The Cochrane review found that scheduled scale and polish did not reduce the early signs of gum disease more than treatment given as needed. It does remove more calculus — six-monthly more than twelve-monthly, on high-certainty evidence — but the clinical importance of that difference is uncertain. Patients did report their teeth felt cleaner. If a practice sells you a fixed cleaning schedule, this is the evidence to ask them about.
